TONIGHT – Friday, August 20th 2010

After a slightly unpleasant week temperature-wise  (just a little bit too hot), it’s time to relax, kick back, and enjoy some of what LA has to offer tonight.  Whether you’re a big concert go-er, love stand-up, or enjoy being mesmerized by dance, we’ve got you covered. If you’d like to check out some other happenings, be sure to stop by the LAWeekly Events Calendar.

Donald Glover @ The Improv

Your favorite actor who happens to play as an ex-high school football star on Community is coming to The Improv tonight.  Glover is also an accomplished writer and rapper, believe it or not, performing underneath the name “Childish Gambino”, taken from a Wu-Tang name generator on the Internet.  In fact, he released his last disc, called CULDESAC a little earlier this year, with some pretty favorable reviews.  Check out the better-known comedy side of Mr. Glover tonight.  Tickets are $20.  The fun starts at 8pm

“Oscar-Winning Shorts Directed by Chuck Jones” @ The Samuel Goldwyn Theater

One of the most legendary figures in the history of cartoon animation is getting a special kind of tribute tonight.  The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is showing nine of Jones’ most well received works, including three Oscar winners:  So Much for So Little (1949), For Scent-Imental Reasons (1949), and The Dot and the Line (1965).  This looks to be a great event for the whole family, and it’s inexpensive too.  Tickets are $5.  Show starts at 7:30pm

Katsura Kan: Oracle & Enigma @ Highways Performance Space

If you’re in the mood for a little culture, consider going to see Butoh master Katsura Kan perform tonight.  He’s got a special, two night only performance of his new show, called Oracle & Enigma.  Known for his truly memorable dances, this is sure to be an eye-opening performance.  Rarely does Kan make his way to Los Angeles, so try and make it either today or tomorrow night.  Tickets are $20 ($15 for students and seniors).  The event starts at 8:30pm
